Ebola in Sierra Leone – the joy of survivors

Image
Ebola in Sierra Leone – the joy of survivors I travelled upcountry last week to one of the worst affected areas of Sierra Leone – Kenema. When you arrive in the town, there’s a feeling that Ebola has settled in with no plans to move any time soon. Chlorine buckets sit outside most restaurants for people to wash their hands; Ebola information posters are plastered on buildings; crackly radios are loudly broadcasting conversations about Ebola; people are talking about ‘dis Ebola bisnis’ relentlessly on the street; and handshaking has been replaced by a brush of the elbows. Spending a few days around people who have been tragically affected by this disease was an unforgettably sad experience. I was however heartened by meeting some of the lucky people who are surviving Ebola. Sierra Leone is now recording the highest number of new cases each week of all the West African countries affected, including Guinea and Liberia. What makes this outbreak unique though, is the increasing numbe...

Man Bleaches His Skin With Acid To Look Like Michael Jackson

Image
A Brazilian Michael Jackson superfan used acid to lighten his skin and spent about £2,000 on a series of cosmetic procedures to look like his hero. Antonio Gleidson Rodrigues, 32, the self-proclaimed number one Michael Jackson impersonator in Brazil, has had rhinoplasty in order to imitate the King Of Pop and spends around four hours each day rehearsing his dance moves. Gleidson Jackson, as he likes to be known, had his first operation five years ago when he had his nasal septum corrected to allow him to reach higher notes when singing. He said: 'I wasn't able to reach notes like Michael before but after surgery I can now sing some notes in falsetto.' Following his first bid at surgery, Gliedson, of Fortalenza, continued in his mission to imitate the world famous pop star by having hyaluronic acid injected into his face, which had a whitening effect, and botox injections to enhance the area under his eyes. The former drama teacher also ...

BREAKING: Boko Haram Captures Another Borno Town

The deadly Boko Haram sect has taken over another Borno town after the successful capture of Damboa about a month ago. The new territory under the control of the terrorist group, is hilly Gwoza town which succumbed to the superior power of the Islamic fundamentalist group on Tuesday. A large detachment of the sect were said to have completely overran the town and causing the residents to flee into the hills and neighbouring Cameroonian villages. A resident of the area that called from one of the hills he had fled to with some other residents of the town who spoke to journalists anonymously, said the Boko Haram terrorists besieged the town in many utility vehicles and Armoured cars.

Experts Say Transmission Of Ebola Virus By Air Possible

THE Ebola Virus is essentially transmitted from human-to-human through direct contact with infected patients, or through contact with body fluids of a victim. However, scientists are not ruling out the possibility of transmission by air through aerosolised particles. Previously, Canadian scientists have shown that the deadliest form of the Ebola virus (the Zaire Ebola) could be transmitted by air between species. Although no human over-ther-air transmission of the lethal viral disorder has been recorded, but the Patrick Sawyer incidence in Lagos, Nigeria, has reopened worries over the implications of the possibility of its transmission in an enclosed environment such as an aircraft cabin. Transmissible from pigs to monkeys by air Studies show that the Ebola virus is transmissible to monkeys from infected pigs without them coming into direct contact. The Ebola virus survives for days outside infected hosts and can “ride” on aerosolised droplets to spread to potential victims. In a de...

BREAKING: Fashola Orders Reversal Of LASU Fees To Old Charges

Mr. Fashola stated this on Thursday at the convocation programme of the university. The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has directed that the controversial fee hike at the Lagos State University, LASU, be reversed. Mr. Fashola stated this on Thursday at the convocation programme of the university. He said the fees would now be returned to the old charges. The reversal comes after months of protests by students and lecturers of the university. The Lagos State Government had, earlier in 2011, increased the fees from N25, 000 to N198, 000 for humanities and education, while medical students were to pay N350, 000. After the protests, the state government approved a reduction by 34 to 60 per cent. That reduction would have seen students pay between N76, 750 and N158, 250 depending on the faculty and year of study. That reduction was still opposed by the students and the lecturers. Thursday’s announcement by the governor could, however, lead to a reversal to the 2011 charges....

7 REASON WHY WOMEN LIVE LONGER THAN MEN

Image
#1 – Unhealthy Habits Excessive smoking, alimentation rich in fats, sedentary activities and consumption of alcohol are typical to men, and partially explain their developing of serious diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, hepatic affections). On the other hand, women are more careful with their eating habits and more concerned about their health. They are not as avid consumers of any kind of drug. #2 – Genetics Women’s immune system ages more slowly; the aging process differs from various reasons. Women have more estrogen, which protects them from cardiovascular affections until menopause. Also, they are more protected from Alzheimer disease and certain types of cancer #3 – Motherhood Women who give birth after the age of 30 apparently possess longevity genes, according to researchers. They can live up to the age of 95 or more. Having babies later on probably means that the reproductive system is healthy enough, so the rest of the organism ages more beautifully. However, babies ...

EBOLA: FG BARS CORPES OF NIGERIA FROM ABROAD

The Federal Government will no longer allow the remains of dead Nigerians, especially from countries battling Ebola virus, from being brought into the country for burial. The Federal Government is also probing the corpse of a Nigerian that was brought into the country from Liberia last month to ascertain whether the deceased died of Ebola or not. The Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, said this on Friday in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Nasidi said, “The Federal Government has issued a directive that no dead body should be brought into the country, especially from neighbouring infected countries in view of the rampaging Ebola outbreak in West Africa. “The order will be communicated to the affected countries through diplomatic channels.” On the Nigerian that was brought into the country, Nasidi said the remains was brought into the country on 21 July, 2014 from Liberia and conveyed from Lagos to Anambra State and deposited in a private mortu...

Families of abducted girls fight Boko Haram.

Image
FAMILIES OF ABDUCTED GIRLS FIGHT BOKO HARAM Samuel Yaga was describing his missing daughter’s dream of becoming a doctor when the air went from his lungs. One hundred days after Sarah was abducted, the raw emotion still has a tendency to detonate unexpectedly. Could a child who would always fall asleep clutching a book survive so long in the grip of a sect whose opposition to western education has led them to burn schoolchildren alive, he wondered. “It would be better if we had a body to bury,” he began, then took a deep, shaky breath. He tried again: “It would be better if we had a body to bury. We’d have been able to cope. But she just disappeared without a trace and we have nothing, not even a body to mourn. This is the worst kind of pain.” Countless families in north-eastern Nigeria are adrift in the same agonising limbo. Boko Haram has outgunned an overstretched and demoralised army, kidnapping girls and women, forcing boys into their ranks and razing entire villages in ...

Ebola: A disease out of control.

EBOLA A DISEASE OUT OF CONTROL. Sierra Leone has declared a state of emergency and called in troops to enforce an Ebola quarantine, joining Liberia in imposing controls to curb the worst ever outbreak of the virus amid fears it could spread beyond West Africa. Ebola has killed more than 700 deaths in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organisation. It has also reached Nigeria's biggest city Lagos, where authorities said on Friday a man had died of the virus. Doctors Without Borders warned on Wednesday that the disease was "out of control". Ebola's symptoms include internal and external bleeding, vomiting and diarrhoea. The disease kills up to 90 percent of those infected, though the death rate in the current epidemic is about 60 percent. The US and countries in Asia and Europe say they have taken measures to prevent the spread of Ebola in their territories.
