The deadly Boko Haram sect has taken over another Borno town after the successful capture of Damboa about a month ago. The new territory under the control of the terrorist group, is hilly Gwoza town which succumbed to the superior power of the Islamic fundamentalist group on Tuesday. A large detachment of the sect were said to have completely overran the town and causing the residents to flee into the hills and neighbouring Cameroonian villages. A resident of the area that called from one of the hills he had fled to with some other residents of the town who spoke to journalists anonymously, said the Boko Haram terrorists besieged the town in many utility vehicles and Armoured cars.

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has directed that the controversial fee hike at the Lagos State University, LASU, be reversed. Mr. Fashola stated this on Thursday at the convocation programme of the university. He said the fees would now be returned to the old charges. The reversal comes after months of protests by students and lecturers of the university. The Lagos State Government had, earlier in 2011, increased the fees from N25, 000 to N198, 000 for humanities and education, while medical students were to pay N350, 000. After the protests, the state government approved a reduction by 34 to 60 per cent. That reduction would have seen students pay between N76, 750 and N158, 250 depending on the faculty and year of study. That reduction was still opposed by the students and the lecturers. The Federal Government will no longer allow the remains of dead Nigerians, especially from countries battling Ebola virus, from being brought into the country for burial. The Federal Government is also probing the corpse of a Nigerian that was brought into the country from Liberia last month to ascertain whether the deceased died of Ebola or not. The Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, said this on Friday in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Sierra Leone has declared a state of emergency and called in troops to enforce an Ebola quarantine, joining Liberia in imposing controls to curb the worst ever outbreak of the virus amid fears it could spread beyond West Africa. Ebola has killed more than 700 deaths in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organisation. It has also reached Nigeria's biggest city Lagos, where authorities said on Friday a man had died of the virus. Doctors Without Borders warned on Wednesday that the disease was "out of control". Ebola's symptoms include internal and external bleeding, vomiting and diarrhoea. The disease kills up to 90 percent of those infected, though the death rate in the current epidemic is about 60 percent. The US and countries in Asia and Europe say they have taken measures to prevent the spread of Ebola in their territories.
